Para-Aminobenzoic acid

Para-Aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is a chemical used in sunscreen that is an essential nutrient for some bacteria. It is sometimes called Vitamin B-x, although Para-Aminobenzoic acid is not essential for humans and it varies in its activity from other B vitamins. The chemical formula is (COOH)-Ph-NH2 / (C7H7NO2) also known as 4-Amino-benzoic aci

Para-Aminobenzoic acid is a white crystalline substance that is only slightly soluble in water. Although humans lack the ability to synthesize folate from Para-Aminobenzoic acid, it is often still sold by some vitamin websites as an essential nutrient. Sulfonamides (sulfa drugs) are chemically similar to PABA, and their antibacterial activity is due to their ability to interfere with PABA utilization by bacteria.

FEDERAL HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
FDA regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering "conventional" foods and drug products (prescription and Over-the-Counter). Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the dietary supplement manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that a dietary supplement is safe before it is marketed. FDA is responsible for taking action against any unsafe dietary supplement product after it reaches the market. Generally, manufacturers do not need to register with FDA nor get FDA approval before producing or selling dietary supplements. Manufacturers must make sure that product label information is truthful and not misleading.
